44.5 cm: compact for tight ranges of motion

The length of a dumbbell bar is often overlooked until it gets in the way. During lateral raises, bars that are too long hit the thighs; during close-grip bench presses, the ends collide in front of the chest; and in rack corners or on narrow shelves, there’s simply not enough space. 

At 44.5 cm, the OB18BB is significantly shorter than the standard length. The 13 cm loading length on each side is designed for weight plates in the mid-range—enough for a typical dumbbell set without making the bar unwieldy. Those who regularly load the bar with very heavy weights are better off with the longer OB20BB. 

29.5 mm Grip and What That Half Millimeter Makes a Difference 

The grip diameter is 29.5 mm, which is half a millimeter above the standard size for a men’s barbell. That may not sound like much, but you can feel the difference in your hand: The slightly thicker grip distributes the pressure over a larger surface area and engages the forearm more effectively. During hammer curls and rows, this allows your grip strength to actively contribute to the movement rather than just holding the bar. 

Secure grip for curls, lateral raises, and triceps work 

The knurling features a “light sharp” finish and extends over 12 cm. It provides a reliable grip for bicep curls, hammer curls, lateral raises, bench presses, and triceps exercises, while remaining moderate enough to handle high repetition counts. An aggressive competition knurling would quickly wear down the palm of the hand during this type of training. 

The bronze bushings ensure a smooth, controlled spin. If the hand rotates during the movement, the weight rotates with it. The dual snap ring closures with the SQMIZE® logo seal off the mounting points. 

Black on matte silver: the two finishes 

The handle features the CrCN Carbon-Chrome Coating Black. CrCN stands for chromium carbonitride, applied in a vacuum and only a few micrometers thick. Because the layer is so thin, it does not cover the knurling or round off its edges—the grip is fully preserved. It also offers high abrasion resistance. 

The mounting brackets are finished in matte silver zinc. Zinc provides cathodic protection for the steel and is therefore ideally placed where discs constantly rub against the surface during installation and removal. The color contrast between the two areas is intentional. 

High-Strength Steel with a Margin of Safety 

The tensile strength exceeds 190,000 PSI, and the static load capacity is 680 kg. This value is not fully utilized on a dumbbell, and that is the point: The bar retains its geometry even after years of continuous use and does not warp when set down while fully loaded.

Care Instructions
