The benefits of training with weight plates
‘Train as you fight’ is the motto for strength training with free weights using dumbbells and barbells. High-quality weight plates on the barbell are a basic requirement. The correct choice of weights is also crucial for successful training. Unlike training on machines, your movements are completely free when training with weight plates and are not restricted by guides.
This guarantees natural movement sequences during training and places the focus of the load exactly where it needs to be. Free weight training with weight plates guarantees you ergonomic muscle training in which every muscle is used in its function. The big advantage: even small auxiliary muscles, which are often barely activated in other forms of training, are used. Your result:
- More strength through optimised intermuscular coordination
- Greater muscle fibre activation and therefore more muscle growth
- Compensation and prevention of muscular imbalances
- Effective strength training through targeted exercises
- Variations in training through minimal weight adjustments with our fractional plates
- More functional strength in everyday life and at work
Weight plates 50mm from SQMIZE® - Large selection for your varied training
Specialised machines undoubtedly have their raison d'être in weight training. But do you have the space to have a whole range of machines in your basement, from the leg press to the chest press? Training with free weights is a comparatively inexpensive and space-saving alternative for your home gym. But even if you're looking for plates for your gym, SQMIZE® is the right place for you.
And the best thing is: at SQMIZE® you can choose from the full range when you want to buy weights. Put together your own set from our 6 series in cast iron and rubberised cast iron in two-hole, three-hole, five-hole and CNC design and expand it conveniently according to your needs - so you always remain flexible on the iron and save money with high-quality weight plates.
Good to know: Weight plates are cheaper in a practical weight plate set.
Cast iron discs - the indestructible classic
The clink of real metal makes athletes' hearts beat faster. After all, this sound conveys the melody of sweat, burning muscles and tears like hardly anything else. The classic weight plate with an internal diameter of 50 mm is also a perennial favourite in the SQMIZE® range. No wonder, as the cast iron weight plates are made of high-quality material.
The weight tolerance of all Olympic weight plates from our cast iron segment is only minimal fluctuations of 1 to 2 per cent. The design is rounded off by a high-quality surface finish with a hard-wearing hammer finish. All cast discs have a hole diameter of 51 mm, making them compatible with all Olympia bars and weight stations with Olympia mounts.
The weight plates from our Olympia Legacy series exude a real hardcore vibe. They are available in weight increments from 1.25 kg and feature an all-round grip hub for optimum handling and a secure grip.
More ergonomics with two, three and five-hole weight plates
Less hardcore, more ergonomic strength training? Then the weight plates with integrated holes are exactly what you're looking for. With a choice of two, three or even five grip recesses, they offer you easy handling and greater ergonomics when training and transferring weights to the barbell bar.
The handles also open up additional training options with just the weight plate. Whether as an additional weight on the weight belt or on its own for upper body side raises - there are no limits to the variety. The perforated plates are available with a classic cast iron hammer finish or as rubberised bumper plates.
Bumper plates - quiet and safe training
Banging weight plates aren't really your thing? Are you more interested in low-noise strength training and more comfortable handling? Then the rubberised plates from SQMIZE® are just the thing if you want to buy weights. Thanks to the rubberised surface, noise is effectively dampened during training.
No rattling on the bar during movement. No rattling when you set your barbell down on the floor or in the rack. In addition, the robust rubber coating of the weight disc not only protects your training equipment, but also the floor and the surrounding area if a weight disc should fall. With their 45 cm diameter, the bumper plates not only ensure increased stability during drops - they can also be easily combined. The weight plates are also highly slip-resistant.
Fractional plates - steady progress guaranteed
Progressive overload - or ‘slow but steady feeds the squirrel’. In no other sport does this principle apply as much as in strength training. Just one more repetition, just half a pound more - all this makes the difference between continuous progress and stagnation. Fractional plates are small weight plates that allow you to make these small incremental steps.
With weight plates ranging from 0.125 kg to 2.5 kg, you work your way up to your target weight step by step. Increase in every workout and give your muscles and mindset the boost they need to surpass themselves. Thanks to a 50.4 mm hole diameter, the fractional plates are compatible with all Olympic bars.
The best exercises with weight plates
When you train with free weights, you have countless options to get your muscles burning and your muscle fibres growing. So that you don't lose track of the variety of exercises, we would like to introduce you to the most effective exercises that will optimally challenge your body.
Let your muscles burn with barbell classics
We'll start with the barbell classics, where weight plates ranging from cast iron discs to fractional plates are most commonly used. The great advantage of these exercises is that you can not only move a lot of weight here, but also increase your specific, functional and absolute strength through complex and multi-joint sequences and thus also fuel muscle building. Some of the absolute top exercises include:
- Barbell squats
- Barbell deadlifts
- Barbell bench presses
- Incline bench presses with the barbell
- Military presses while standing
- Power cleans
- Barbell rows bent over
- Shrugs
- Lunges
- Barbell curls
- Skull crushers
Solo training with weight plates
Strength training with weight plates is also possible without a barbell or dumbbell bar. The perforated plates from SQMIZE® with two, three or five recesses offer you even more training options. For example, you can use them together with a training belt as an additional weight for pull-ups and dips. Alternatively, you can use them to make hyperextensions or crunches more difficult or even perform entire exercises such as lunges, shrugs or upper body side raises with them. There are no limits to the possibilities and your creativity when training.
Train effectively and safely with weight plates
Training with free weights is the most effective way to increase strength, fitness and muscle development. However, the complexity of the movements demands a lot from your body. Both in terms of strength and coordination. In order to train safely and effectively, technique is the be-all and end-all. By learning the movements properly, you increase your strength, train your muscles from the weakest link and avoid injuries.
Weight plates and fractional plates in various weight gradations offer you the opportunity to improve slowly but surely. This allows you to maintain a clean technique but increase your training weight with each session. True to the motto: With micro-progressions to high performance! Another plus - the SQMIZE® Bumper Plates are drop-proof and therefore protect both you and your surroundings.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions about training with weight plates
Which exercises are suitable for training with a weight plate?
All barbell exercises are suitable. With the high-quality weight plates from SQMIZE®, you benefit from the easy loading and unloading of the bar and the secure grip. You can also perform numerous exercises with just one weight plate as an add-on or training weight.
Loading weight plates correctly - how do I load a barbell?
A barbell is always loaded on the same side one after the other, otherwise it can tip over. Start with the largest and heaviest weight disc and put it on first. The next weight plates then follow, from heavy to light, and are secured by a precisely manufactured metal centre ring. When unloading the weight bar, proceed in the reverse order. For minimal weight adjustments during your barbell workout, you can use fractional plates.
Bumper plates vs weight plates: What's the difference?
While cast iron weight plates are rigid and firm, bumper plates are not only rubberised, but also give a little. They also have a larger diameter of 45cm. Bumper plates can be combined and are more elastic as a whole, making them resistant to dropping. This means that you can simply drop the weight discs after a hard set of exercises. High-tempered bumper plates made of so-called crumb rubber have particularly good bounce properties.
What should I look out for when buying a weight plate?
If you want to buy weights, you should always look for high quality and durability. The weight deviation is important here. This should not exceed 2.5 per cent. The hole diameter is also important. If it is too small, the training weights will not fit on the barbell. With a hole diameter of more than 50 mm, you can be sure that the weights are compatible with Olympic barbell bars. The design, the additional rubber coating or the number of grip recesses depend on your personal taste.
